Solo Travel
I’ve been travelling solo for 7+ years (I did also spend 6 months in America solo on a Fulbright teacher exchange programme in 2009) and I love it so much it is now hard for me to want to travel with anyone! You can read more about my travelling history here.
For me, the absolute best thing about travelling solo is the FREEDOM it provides: I can do what I want, when I want and I don’t have to consider anyone else’s needs and feelings. For someone who’s been a people-pleaser for most of my life, only having to consider my own needs and desires has been liberating.
It’s also massively increased my confidence, as I only have myself to rely on and, when things go wrong (as they invariably do), I have to problem-solve until all is well once again. Facing, and overcoming, these challenges is just about the most empowering thing I have ever done – not to mention it’s the things that go wrong that make for the best stories later!
I’d recommend travelling solo to anyone, and fully believe everyone should do it at least once in their lives. It’s a shortcut to growth.
As women, we do have to consider safety for female solo travel and I know that’s the biggest fear of many women who would like to try.
Here I will be posting everything I wished I’d known about travelling solo as a woman (I just did it): I’ll be sharing how you can build up to travelling alone, packing lists, safety tips and the best solo female travel destinations – as well as this ultimate guide to solo female travel.
